President Biden signed an executive order Monday that lifted the Trump administration’s ban on individuals openly identifying as transgender in the military.
The order would also allow for military personnel to receive paid gender reassignment surgeries under their health plans.
“Allowing all qualified Americans to serve their country in uniform is better for the military and better for the country because an inclusive force is a more effective force,” said the White House in a statement. “Simply put, it’s the right thing to do and is in our national interest.”
Around 1,000 military members have been diagnosed with gender dysphoria, although the Pentagon estimates around 9,000 current members identify as transgender. Continue reading…
